MSP does not cover private counselling or therapy in BC. It only covers mental health care delivered by a doctor or psychiatrist through a hospital or community mental health clinic. Most private therapy sessions are paid out of pocket, through extended health benefits, or through sliding scale arrangements.

In BC, "counsellor" and "therapist" are often used interchangeably and typically refer to Registered Clinical Counsellors (RCCs). Psychologists hold a doctorate and can provide psychological assessments in addition to therapy. Both can provide effective therapy.

No. You can contact a private therapist directly without a doctor's referral. If you're accessing services through a hospital or community mental health clinic, a referral may be required.
